We are thrilled to announce our Athlete of the Month: Angelica Perez!
Coach Hannah says, “Angelica is SO GREAT. She joined us from a silent auction win, and she has been a consistent member ever since! It was so fun to watch her compete in the powerlifting meet and absolutely crush her lifts. She has been a great ambassador for powerlifting and welcomed lots of new people into the fold as well. I don’t get the pleassure of coaching her that often as she is mostly an evening person, but I am always happy to see her smiling face.”
Angelica joined Solcana after bidding on a membership during Pro-Choice Minnesota’s silent auction knowing very little about Solcana. She was hooked after experiencing the gym’s focus on inclusivity, community, and strength building. The biggest benefit of starting is the reduction of her chronic shoulder pain and the number of groceries she can carry at one time. But she says, “On a sincere note it is also about rebuilding the trust in my body, after all the hard things I’ve put it through, it’s still capable of great things.”
Outside of Solcana one of her favorite hobbies is baking, especially with seasonal ingredients or for a theme. She recently made billionaire bars in honor of Succession’s premiere episode.
Coach Garrett Hoffman adds, “I love Angelica. She works very hard and always ensures she’s moving well with good technique. She’s willing to try anything even if it’s really hard! I love having her in class – she’s a good, positive, and consistently presence who sets a good example for athletes around her.”
Angelica proudly serves on Our Justice’s board, they have the abortion assistance and lodging fund, provide free Plan B in the Twin Cities, and are plaintiffs in Doe v. Minnesota, a lawsuit seeking to dismantle Minnesota’s restrictive abortion laws. She is always down to talk reproductive justice, in fact it is what brought her from Texas to Minnesota!
Coach KK comments, “Angelica is so strong! A very consistent powerlifter, I got to watch Angelica set some new PRs and come alive on the platform at the recent Powerlifting meet. I love her vibe and cant wait to see her continue to grow!”
