Solcana blog

Forge new connections with people who value their health, and use the strength you gain here to give back to the greater Twin Cities community.
It’s already been a year since our last 5k!

Last year was a blast, and this year is going to be even better.  EVERYONE (members, non-members, EVERYONE) is welcome to join.

The Second Annual Solcana 5k is taking place Saturday, August 20th. Runners will begin at 9am in Kenwood park. The route will go through a part of the park and complete a full loop around Lake of the Isles. Any and all fitness levels are encouraged to join the fun. Whether you run, walk/run, just walk, it’s going to be great. After the race we will go to Sebastian Joes down the street and eat ice cream. Ever heard of it?!

This year, donations will be going to a Racial Justice Workshop that we will be holding on September 29th from 6:00 – 8:30 pm in the gym. In response to recent events, and in solidarity with Black Lives Matter and many other community organizations working to end police brutality, Solcana Crossfit and Wellness is hosting a 2.5 hour community workshop on Racial Justice. This workshop will explore the history of race and white identity, as it relates to contemporary issues of police violence. Participants will have an opportunity to explore their early learnings about race, and will walk away with a new framework for understanding racism as a systemic phenomenon, rather than an individual problem. This will be a shame-free environment, where white participants as well as participants who are people of color, can gain resources to support further learning. This workshop is FREE and open to the public; donations from the 5K will help us cover the cost of this event. We asked Autumn Brown, the best of the best to fly here from NY to put on a workshop that is welcome, inclusive and designed for learning and growth. It’s an expensive endeavor, but well worth it, so any additional funds we can raise to help cover it are greatly appreciated.

AutumnBThe Racial Justice Workshop is presented by AORTA, a worker co-op of educators devoted to strengthening movements for social justice and a solidarity economy. AORTA Trainer, Autumn Brown, is based in Minnesota, and brings over 10 years of experience leading workshops on racial justice and social justice movements. Autumn is an Army brat, who grew up on military bases in Georgia, Germany, Pennsylvania, and Kansas.  For more information about AORTA and Autumn’s full bio, visit aorta.coop.

Suggested donation is $20, but give whatever you can. Donations can be processed via WODify for gym members, or with cash the day of the race.
