Solcana blog

About 5 years ago, I worked with a personal trainer for the very first time. I met with them twice a month (at $75 a pop, that came to $150/month) and then I was on my own the rest of the time. I did work out, often doing the same exercises my trainer had showed me when we met, but something was lacking. I loved working 1:1 with the trainer, mostly because she held me accountable and pushed me beyond my limits. Heck, the first time she worked with me I had to go excuse myself empty the contents of my stomach! This particular trainer was great, but after three months, I had to reevaluate as my budget wouldn’t allow me the 3x/week she recommended. So, I did what I could. And then I stopped.

TRUTH
TRUTH

Many of you have joined me for a class or two at Solcana CrossFit and have had such an awesome experience and I LOVE THAT. I want everyone to experience the euphoria, support, and camaraderie I feel so lucky to be a part of. Plus, the workouts are really workouts. Each class is never more than 12 people so, it really feels very similar to my personal training experience because I have direct access to a trainer (we call them coaches). And the Solcana Coaches? Well, they are top notch.

The pricing at Solcana CrossFit is really easy to find – it’s right on the website. There are no hidden fees or additional costs…it’s just what it is plain and simple. I understand at first sight it can be a little bit of a surprise, especially considering we live in an age with $30/month twenty-four hour gyms. I get that. Those types of gyms definitely serve a purpose, and you have to find what works for you. My $30/month gym didn’t work for me, even with the additional $150/month cost of a personal trainer. I barely went and when I was there on my own, I never pushed myself hard enough to actually see any kind of benefit. So, of course I stopped going. If you’re $30/month gym isn’t working for you, stop paying for it and come join me at Solcana. Just do it. Sign up for a year and it’s $165/month – basically EXACTLY the same cost of 2 personal training sessions a month anywhere else (not to mention on top of the monthly membership fee you’re likely already paying). At Solcana, come as many times a week as you want! Every class is your own training session. You see what I mean? It just makes sense. And to piggyback on last week’s post, you’re worth it. YOU ARE WORTH IT.

I can’t wait to work out with you!

Last night, we completed our baseline assessment once again. You might remember that the last time we did this was in Week 29 (so, exactly 10 weeks ago) and is a great way to gauge progress. This test was the first thing I ever did with Coach Hannah back in May 2014, and consists of:

  • 500m row
  • 40 squats
  • 30 situps
  • 20 pushups
  • 10 pullups

The first time it took me exacly 10 minutes to complete. In December, It took me 6:04. Last night I finished in 6:01. I’m still improving! That’s a lot of stuff to cram into a short amount of time (though I’m still on scaled versions of pullups). I’m so serious about nailing a real pullup that I just bought a door frame pullup bar for my home. I’m going to get this you guys. (omg who am I? I can’t believe I just actually typed those words out.)

This week marks the first week of the CrossFit Open, something my Saturday 9am Women-Trans-Femme class has been practicing for since early January. Anyone can sign up to compete in five workouts over five weeks and post their scores online. Last year, the Open reached more than 209,000 athletes from around the world. It’s pretty cool as we can either perform the Open workout at a participating CrossFit affiliate like Solcana where you will be judged in person, or we can film your full performance and upload it to YouTube or another video-sharing site. The video will be displayed alongside your score so other CrossFit athletes can be your judge. I’m going to stick with the in person option FOR SURE. No one else needs to be judging this. Based on our practice training, the Open is intense and tough. I’m very nervous going into it as there are still many things I can’t do – like toes to bar, chest to bar, pullups, etc. It’s okay though, as I’ll be able to do modifications and still get a great workout. I’m not planning on heading to the CrossFit Regionals anytime soon, so I am going to be content doing what I can do.

Of course, that is if I live to tell the story. Stay tuned.

OH GOD PLEASE LET ME LIVE.
