IMG_3400It’s week 3 of the WholeMe Food Challenge, meaning I’ve successfully survived so far. Adding more veggies in week 1 (3c per day) and eliminating grains last week. I do have a confession to make. I drank a beer. I know. I was in Milwaukee most of last week doing shows at the Comedy Café, and Thursday night I ordered a New Glarus Spotted Cow and found myself sipping away on it before I remembered I was GRAIN FREE. What can I say? When in Rome, you know? Be happy that I stayed away from beer the rest of the weekend – even through that devastating Packer loss on Sunday. I didn’t even drink through it, you guys.

Staying with my oldest friends while visiting Brew City was great for many reasons: a) they are great people b) they are the most hilarious couple I know c) I love their children d) they have healthy eating habits e) they were ever so accommodating to me in my grain free eating. As we prepped for meals or grocery treks, they would proactively consider my dietary choices without making me feel annoying about it. I can’t tell you how much I appreciated them taking things as seriously as I am.IMG_3398

I mean, I even made it through a tense Packers game without burying my emotions in bread-like items and beer. NO BEER! I sipped my Strongbows like the grain-free lady I’ve become. And, if that’s not unbelievable enough, my contribution to the Packers party was roasted brussels sprouts and bacon – the recipe courtesy of my deal pal and accountability partner, Hannah P. Needless to say, everyone at the party asked for the recipe. Turns out healthy food can be good food. That’s one of the things I’m really learning on this trek.

I have noticed that I’m still not eating enough food – mostly due to appetite loss as a side effect of a medication I am on. Please know I am well aware of that, and I’m working on it. Coach Hannah has recommended I start supplementing with wheat-free protein shakes, so rest assured I’m headed to GNC over my lunch hour today to purchase some powder. This is really beneficial considering it’s protein week, and I’m supposed to consume 152g each day. I came up about 20g short yesterday on Day 1, and I am not about to let that happen again. I’ll keep you posted with how this is going, and, in the meantime, if you have any suggestions on things I can do, I would love to hear from you!

We’re also hosting a Solcana WholeMe Food Exchange on Saturday, January 31 at the gym. If you’re interested in coming, check out the Facebook event here. The plan is simple: each person will bring a dish that serves 10 to share, along with 5 empty  containers to fill with delicious dishes prepared by our gym homies. You come AND leave with food for the week! Not to mention, this will give you good choices of foods to eat during the Super Bowl the following day. I hope you can join us as we continue on this trek to healthier living in 2015!
