Solcana blog

I always love a blog post about exciting things coming up, what an excellent way to start the week! But first, we need to cover a few important housekeeping items. There are a couple of housekeeping things we need to get out of the way, to keep everything around here running smooth as ice.

No-shows: In the past month, no-shows have become a problem around here. Athletes are signing up for class and not showing up, without cancelling their attendance. The issue is that people are specifically no-showing to the 5:30 pm class, which is our busiest class. I urge you, if you know you can’t make it to class, please cancel an hour before so that you can open a spot for someone on the waitlist.

  • NEW RULE FOR NO-SHOWS: Ifivedollarbillsf you no-show a class, you owe me $5. That’s right. $5 will be donated from you, directly to the teen program. Consider it a friendly warning, as well as an opportunity to raise a little $$ for the teens. Starting March 1st, no-shows will get an e-mail from me as an initial warning. April 1st, no more warnings, just bucks!
  • IF YOU NEED TO CANCEL: Please do so an hour before class, so people on the waitlist have time to sign up and leave work before attending class.

Bloody Bars: This morning I discovered a bloody bar. There have been a few other instances of bloody bars in the past couple of weeks. If you bleed during a workout, it is your responsibility to fully clean your equipment before you leave. The “sweat spray” contains bleach. Spray this on your bar and let it rest for 2-3 minutes, then wipe off the bar with one of the wet wipes from the back wall. Same goes for pullup bars. If you are not sure how to clean your bar, ask your coach. It’s a gross habit and we gotta fix it!

Now, on to more exciting adventures

The Open happens every year, and it is a blast to participate. CrossFit Athletes from around the world complete workouts in their home gyms, and then post their scores online at games.crossfit.com. Here at Solcana we have been training for the open during the 9a and 10a Saturday classes. We have been working on skills commonly seen during Open WOD’s, and practicing weighted elements that often appear during the Open.

This year, we will be holding the Open work outs on Saturday morning at 9, 10 and 11 am. If you have been participating in the open training classes, just keep attending your regularly scheduled time. If you haven’t been participating, but you would like to, please attend the 11 am class. A couple of notes on this:

  • If you want your scores counted online and scored by a judge, you need to attend 9a or 10a
  • At 11a, athletes will not judge or count for one another, so the scores will be honor system
  • At 11a, there will be an alternative workout available that will be a modified version of the Open WOD, in case you are unable to complete the workout as written.
  • The 11a class will still continue to work on their gymnastics skills in the beginning of class, and the hour will be structured as normal.

The Open workouts are announced on Thursday night at 7 pm on the CrossFit games website, and we will announce them on our facebook page as well. They begin this coming weekend, Feb 26th, and run until the end of March. Once the Open workouts are done, we will return to a regular Saturday schedule!

New Open Gym Time

Monday/Wednesday, 3:00-4:30 pm there will be an additional opportunity for Open Gym. Normally I workout during this time, so I can’t yet offer a class, but I can offer an opportunity to come workout along side me. Starting next Monday, March 2nd you can find the 3:00-4:30 open gym listed on the digital calendar.
