18.4 is in the books! I have to say, this one was by far my favorite. I love heavy deadlifts, and it was fun to pair it with something challenging like a handstand pushup. I wish I had made it to the handstand walks because it would have been really fun to try those in a workout, but alas. I tried to convince Josh to let me retest while we were in California but he said “would you rather hike in 77 degrees or retest a workout in some random CrossFit gym?” and I knew what my answer had to be. I heard it was a blast here at the gym and I hope you all had as much fun as I did trying this 9-minute burner!

Matt and Marijke have this to say about the scoring: “similar to last week, we had to do some acrobatics to normalize everyone’s scores between Rx, Scaled +, and Scaled. If you finished the workout, we gave you the total number of reps for the entire workout (165) and then added 1 rep for every 5 seconds you finished before the 9 minute mark. For example, a time of 7:53, equates to 178 (165 reps + 13 reps for finishing 67 seconds before 9:00). After that, whether you finished the workout or not, we took total reps and applied a modifier based on how challenging the level you completed was –  Rx (3:1), Scaled + (1.25:1), or Scaled (1:1).”

At the end of it all, Tamra came out on top with 105 awesome reps Rx. Crushed it!! Also BIG PROPS to Chris, Craig and Kaitlin for making their first top-10 appearance of the Open. Also, amazing work by Mary and Delany, both of their first times getting into the top 20 this year. Lastly, I just have to say WOW for the folks that actually finished this workout in under 9 minutes, incredible work!

In team scores, Cirque du Sore Legs is on top for another week. That makes it four in a row! 3 Pats and a Bahe-by are only slightly edging them out. Another win by Cirque du Sore Legs would easily clinch the top spot, so it looks like the heat is on for 18.5 team rivalries. Petey’s Pals were in 18th last week, and this week they soared to the 3rd spot. Four Peas in a WOD also went from 19th to 6th. Hufflebuff moved up 3 spots in the overall ranking, and Bad Dod edged out Kipping it Real and Dangerous Queens from the top 5. Based on the scoring, it is a very tight battle for those top 5 spots, so no team should relax quite yet!

Stats from 18.3

  • 83 out of 102 registered athletes completed the workout.
  • We had 14 athletes complete the workout RX, 28 athletes do S+ and 41 athletes do Scaled.
  • The average raw score was 119 reps

Shout-outs from the Week:

  • Amelia says “Kira going RX was sooooo inspiring!!! She was so persistent chipping away at those handstand push-ups!!” Not to mention she did the whole thing in a tutu.
  • Coach Ryan: “Ikraan did it all by herself with a bum knee. Kira was awesome! She did Rx and those DL were at about 90% of her 1 Rm. Jade also had done maybe 9 HSPU in her whole life and then almost doubled it during the workout. Cindy and Sasha also crushed the outfit game when they rocked Tutus. The pics and gifs are awesome. All the badass scaled finishers deserve a shout out. Doesn’t matter if it was scaled. That’s a crap ton of work to get done in 9 mins!”
  • Nate says “The 530 and 630 am crews wake up early every week, and they just get it done with these insane open workouts. 25-30 athletes complete the workout by 730 am, most without even knowing what they are getting into. 730 am is Probably before most Friday night lights peeps are even awake too:) props to @kaitlin for making sure it even happens. Lots of groggy brains that time of day!”
  • Coach Kaitlin: “Leah G and Nora W are beasts!! They are great teammates and they push each other in an encouraging way. Nora rocked the deadlifts with great form and Leah’s push-ups looked A+++++. Also can’t say enough about Junauda’s energy and excitement. Junauda, Aram and Hector make 6:30 a blast and fill the room with positivity that sets the tone for a great workout. I love that Junauda jumps all the way in and pushes hard.”

Congratulations to everyone who did this workout, I wish I could have been in town to witness the glory! ONLY ONE WEEK LEFT. Can you believe it?? 18.5 is gonna be lit. I am hoping we can get 95 athletes to complete it, do you think it’s possible? I do!! Let’s fill up the gym on Friday and make this last workout really pop. Any predictions? We still haven’t seen snatches so I am crossing my fingers for a heavy snatch ladder.
